Science in a Minute 012320 Australian Scientists Discover Earth's Oldest Asteroid Impact Crater
Scientists at Australia’s Curtin University say they have precisely dated Earth’s oldest asteroid impact crater. The researchers found that the 70-kilometer wide Yarraburra crater was formed 2.229 billion years ago when an asteroid slammed into the ground in the outback of Western Australia. The researchers also found evidence that the asteroid impact, which created the crater, may have helped end a global ice age known as a Snowball Earth.
