Bayern Munich of Germany, the English club Liverpool, PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands and Italian power Juventus have reached the quarterfinal round of the Champions League football tournament.
Despite losing 1-0 in London Wednesday, Bayern ousted Arsenal of England, 3-2, on aggregate. Two-time winner Juventus eliminated nine-time champion Real Madrid of Spain, advancing 2-1 on aggregate after 30 minutes of extra time. This year is the first since 1993 that a Spanish team has failed to reach the quarterfinals of Europe's top club competition.
Liverpool, a four-time champion, strolled into the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen of Germany. PSV Eindhoven defeated Monaco, 2-0, to advance, 3-0.
On Tuesday, Chelsea of England advanced, 5-4, on aggregate against FC Barcelona of Spain, AC Milan of Italy ousted England's Manchester United, 2-0, on aggregate. Three-time defending French champion Lyon demolished Werder Bremen of Germany, 7-2, advancing 10-2.
In the remaining second-round match, FC Porto of Portugal plays at Inter Milan of Italy on Tuesday. The two teams drew 1-1 in Portugal.
The draw for the quarterfinals and semifinals is March 18th. Any of the eight clubs can be drawn against each other. The Champions League quarterfinals are April fifth through sixth and April 12th and 13th. The semifinals are April 26th and 27th and May third and fourth. The final is May 25 in Istanbul, Turkey.
