Parra Wins Giro's 13th Stage; Savoldelli Takes Pink Jersey

update

Colombian cyclist Ivan Parra has captured the 13th stage of the Tour of Italy (Giro d'Italia), crossing the finish line alone after the grueling ride through the Dolomite mountains.

Parra moved into the lead on the final uphill section leading to Ortisei, finishing Saturday's 218-kilometer stage from Mezzocorona to Ortisei in 6:31:35 hours. That was 23 seconds ahead of Juan Manuel Garate of Spain and third-place finisher Jose Rujano Guillen of Venezuela (credited with the same time).

Paolo Savoldelli, who finished the stage nearly 4:00 minutes behind the winner, took the overall leader's pink jersey from fellow-Italian Ivan Basso. Basso finshed more than 1:00 back.

Italian riders now hold the top four spots in the overall standings. Salvodelli leads Basso by 50 seconds, while Danilo Di Luca is another 0:03 back in third place. Gilberto Simoni is fourth, 2:16 minutes behind the leader.

Sunday's 14th stage is another difficult ride through the mountains, covering 210 kilometers from Egna to Livigno. The Tour ends May 29 in Milan.
