Pietersen to Debut Against Australia in Ashes Series

South Africa native Kevin Pietersen will make his test debut in England's lineup when the first Ashes match against Australia starts Thursday at Lord's in London.

The 25-year-old Pietersen replaces veteran Graham Thorpe, and is one of five players in the lineup who have never faced Australia in a test match.

Pietersen hit an unbeaten 91 off 65 balls in a one-day match against Australia last month. He also compiled three one-day centuries in England's tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe last October.

Spin bowler Ashley Giles is back in the lineup after missing two tests against Bangladesh because of a hip injury. The five-match Ashes series continues through September 12th. Australia has won the series a record eight consecutive times dating back to 1989.
