The death toll in the landslide that hit southwestern China reached 44 Thursday, as recovery teams, working in freezing conditions, found an additional body after four days of searching through rubble and dirt, state media said.

The body was found Thursday night, said state broadcaster CCTV, which posted photos of equipment and search teams that are part of a contingent of more than 1,000 rescuers.

The landslide hit houses Monday at the foot of a slope in Liangshui, a village in a remote and mountainous part of Yunnan province.

Two survivors were found on Monday.

A preliminary investigation found that the landslide was triggered by the collapse of a cliff, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

The disaster is among several deadly events in China over the past few days. Also on Monday, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Xinjiang region, killing three, and 39 people died in a fire that hit a commercial building Wednesday in Jiangxi province.
