New research suggests that an eventual collision of two dwarf galaxies with our galaxy is already producing new stars in the far reaches of the Milky Way. The research provides evidence that the new stars are made of extragalactic material, probably from the approaching dwarf galaxies, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The collisions aren’t expected to occur for between one and four billion years from now.
