China's Great Proletariat Cultural Revolution, Mao Zedong’s campaign to purge capitalist and traditionalist influences, had disastrous consequences for millions of Chinese, but little of what was happening reached the outside world. The late Canadian-American journalist Morley Safer managed to convince authorities to let him travel around China in 1967. As he told VOA's Natalie Liu, his footage and observations provided a rare window into a tumultuous period of China’s history.
